Minutes of the May 2003 meeting

Vice President Sheryl W. called the meeting to order at 7:38 PM at VFW Post 4809 Norfolk, VA.

There were 50 members present and three guests, Mildred H., Hans S. and Glenn N. III.

President's Remarks:  None

Reports:
    Ray I. presented the Treasurer's report; it was accepted as read.

    The Bourse Chairman's report was given orally by Malcolm, everything continues on track.

    The Secretary's report was read and approved.

Old Business:
    John K. last month's coin game winner provided information on the Liberty Nickel that he had researched.

    Dave C. gave the membership some additional information on the Richmond Coin Club's proposed trip to the ANA Convention this summer in Baltimore.  The bus has 47 seats and the cost would be about $15.00 per person.  He will have updated information as the convention date nears.

    Claude D. thanked the club for allowing him to bid in the club's auction in an absentee status for the last two meetings.  (The club is always willing to accommodate members when their attendance at meetings is curtailed because of conflicting obligations.)

New Business:
    Bob H. spoke on the club's website and its inauguration within the next two weeks.  He made a presentation to the board at their last meeting.  He spoke of security measures that he has taken.  The website address is: www.tidewatercoinclub.org.

Show and Tell:
    Doug B. spoke on the role of the Liberty ships in WWII and the recent visit of one of the few remaining Liberty ships to Norfolk.  He displayed a medal made from the copper taken from the ship's degaussing cables.

    Paul A. and Chuck F. displayed and spoke on the 50th anniversary medal that the Virginia Peninsula Coin Club had struck and which they distributed at their annual banquet.

Exhibits:
    Paul A. exhibited some examples of early Chinese Cash Coins together with some figurines of the period.

    Chuck F. exhibited his type set of the fifty U. S. Commemorative Silver Coins from 1892 to 1954.

Door Prize Winners:  Gene F., Don C., Tom C.

Coin Game:  The subject was U.S. Half Dollar minted between the years of 1801 and 2003. The Kennedy series was chosen.  The winner was Norm F., who gave us some facts on the Kennedy Half Dollar.

Education Program:  Sheryl W. gave an interesting talk on United Stated Currency.  The talk spoke on the highlights in our country's currency evolution from the colonial period to the present.  She spoke to its continuing evolution and changes still being made to our Federal Reserve Notes, our currently circulating currency.

Junior Question:  The question for our junior members concerned the twenty cent piece.  We had two winners Jason I. and Ryan N.  Jack had prizes for our two winners.

50/50 Winner:  Bob K.

Raffle Winners:  Garland T., Tom C., Ryan N., Sean A., Bob K., Don I., Nadine M. and George S. (No double winner this month.)

Auction:  The auction was lively with strong bidding.  Only a couple of lots drew zero bids.

Items for the Betterment of the Club:  A member proposed that we have a program or programs on the following topics:
    Grading Coins
    Cleaning Coins
    Dealing with Dealers
    Pricing of Coins

Next Meeting Items:  The coin for next month's Coin Game will be a coin showing an eagle in flight.
