| President Guy C. called the meeting to order at 7:35 PM at VFW Post
4809 Norfolk, VA.
There were 45 members and one guest present. The guest was Paris A. President's Remarks: Guy spoke of the recent ANA Show in Baltimore. He commented on the exhibits and the display of the five 1913 Liberty Nickels. He asked for a show of hands of the club members who went to the Baltimore show. Of the 45 members present at the meeting it appeared that we had twenty or more who made the trip to Baltimore. Reports: The Bourse Chairman's report was given orally by Malcolm assisted by Paul. The final mailing of contracts went out last week, and the raffle tickets are in and are being distributed by Paul and Sheryl this evening. Please turn in your money and unsold raffle tickets at our October meeting at the latest. There will be flyers, providing information on the show, handed out at next month's meeting. The Secretary's reports for the June and July meetings were read and approved. Old Business: A question was raised concerning the awarding of TICs for selling Raffle tickets. Sheryl advised us that three TICs will be awarded per book sold. New Business: A proposal was presented to the membership concerning the purchasing of T-shirts. It drew a spirited response. The proposal was continued for further study. Fran R. has it for action. Show and Tell: Tom C. brought in two nickels with "Cuds" on them, plus a J. F. Kennedy medal and a medal from Florida. Dave C. displayed two recently acquired notes with special serial numbers. George S. brought in some of his Panda coins and coins from the Pacific Island country of Palau. Sandy B. spoke on his recently published article "Spending your way through Jewish History". Sandy has become our resident author and we take pride in his accomplishments. Bill H. spoke of his attending the commissioning of the USS Ronald Reagan, and his nostalgia at seeing the USS Enterprise, the ship that he served on at the next pier. Then he presented the club with an Australian coin struck to commemorate the sinking of the USS Houston and HMAS Perth during the WWII battle of Sundra Straits. Chuck F. spoke on the freebies available at the ANA Convention and displayed some examples that he had received. Sheryl W. spoke on some medals and a pin that she had recently acquired from the USS Theodore Roosevelt. Exhibits: Sheryl W. put together a very striking display of materials; coins, medals, brochures and pamphlets that she accumulated at the ANA Convention Show in Baltimore. She, also, remarked that she ran out of money around three o'clock and spent the remainder of her time walking the floor and looking at the exhibits. Door Prize Winners: Shawn A., John K., Ted M. Coin Game: The subject was a U.S. cent. The cent that was in question was the Flying Eagle Cent and Don C. was the winner. He gave us some facts on the short lived Flying Eagle Cent Series. Education Program: Bob H. our computer guru gave an informative and interesting talk on using the NET in conjunction with our coin collecting hobby. He specifically covered Search Engines, Links and Bookmarks. Since most of our members have computers and are hooked up with the World Wide Web it was a particular timely presentation. He answered questions from the audience and demonstrated how quick a problem can be solved with the right information. Bob is extremely knowledgeable in the computer field and I'm sure he would assist any member who has computer related questions. Junior Question: The question concerned the first coins to have the "S" mint mark. Our two juniors fielded the question and were each awarded a prize by the program's sponsor Jack L. 50/50 Winner: Fran R. Raffle Winners: Travis V. (double winner), Jesse A., Tom A., Brian B., Tom W., Norm F. and Glenn N. Long Term Raffle Winner: Bill H. Auction: Our fifty lot auction was active on some lots and some lots languished but most of the items found new owners. Remember each member may submit up to five lots per auction. Turn in your auction lots to Sheryl and she will be sure to include them in the next month's auction. Sheryl only wants the auction list not the actual items. Items for the Betterment of the Club: Denny M. informed the club of a new microscope that can be hooked up to your computer for viewing your collection. It is relatively inexpensive. Other members of the club provided additional information. Welcome back to Joe T. It is nice to see that he is feeling better. Jack L's quarterly show will be held on September 6, 2003. Next Meeting Items: The coin for the coin game will be the U.S. quarter dollar 1804 - 2003. The meeting adjourned at 9:50 PM. |
