| President Guy C. called the meeting to order at 7:30 PM at VFW Post
4809 Norfolk, VA.
There were 50 members and 4 guests present. The guests were; Mildred H., Dave J., Stafford A., and Sally R. President's Remarks: Guy spoke of our upcoming show and asked for volunteers to help with set-up, registration, and clean-up. Reports: The Bourse Chairman's Report was given orally by Malcolm; everything appears to be on track. It looks as if we will have another successful show. The Secretary's Report was read and approved. Old Business: A call was made for nominations from the floor for members interested in running for next year's board. John K. was nominated. All currently serving board members with the exception of Chuck F. will be seeking reelection. New Business: None Show and Tell: Chuck F. brought in three recent additions to his naval exonumia collection. Charles G. displayed a pair of certified coins explaining the grading nuances of the various grading service, particularly between Cupro Nickel and Silver coins. The coins he chose were a MS65 Ike Dollar and a MS66 Silver Roosevelt Dime. Gene F. brought in a brochure touting the gold bar and coins recovered from the SS Central America. He also donated a video for all members' use. John C. reported that New York City had retired all of its subway tokens and was now using a plastic card to pay the toll. Exhibits: Sheryl W. premiered her Benjamin Franklin exhibit which will be on display at our upcoming show this weekend. Door Prize Winners: Chuck F., Mike G., Gene F., Tom A. Coin Game: Bob K. produced an Icelandic coin with a representation of a Viking on it and explained the significance of the devices on both sides of the coin. The coin was struck in commemoration of the 1100th anniversary of the founding of Iceland. Education Program: Guy C., Charles G., and Chuck F. acted out a few examples using role play of some of the possible scenarios that frequently occur between dealer and customer at a coin show. The membership became active participants voicing the various negative and positive experiences that they had had with dealers. It was a lively exchange and we were only able to scratch the surface within our allotted time. We will definitely have a similar program in the near future, most likely before our February show. Junior Question: The question concerned the motto "In God We Trust" the three juniors we had present explained that it first occurred on the two-cent piece of 1864. The juniors continue to display an increasing knowledge of coin collecting and Jack L. rewarded them with a prize for their participation and research. 50/50 Winner: Sally R. Long Term Raffle Winner: Steve E. Raffle Winners: Larry P. Jr, John K. (2), Michael G. (2), Paul A., Zora S. and Jerry B. Auction: The auction started off slowly but became lively when more than one bidder wanted a particular lot. Most lots sold and some went for very strong prices while a few went for minimum. Remember each member may submit up to five lots per auction. Turn in your auction lots to Sheryl and she will be sure to include them in the next month's auction. Sheryl only requires the auction list not the actual items. Items for the Betterment of the Club: None Next Meeting Items: The coin for the coin game will be a United States Dime minted from the years 1800-2003. The meeting adjourned at 9:45 PM. |
