Minutes of the November 2003 meeting

President Guy C. called the meeting to order at 7:35 PM at VFW Post 4809, Norfolk, VA.

There were 44 members and six (6) guests present, all of whom signed up as new members. The guests were Jim K., Vincent M., Bill S., Rob T., Hans J. S., and Edgar B. (who was a past TCC member back in the 1960s.)

President's Remarks:  Guy spoke about a Kid's Interactive Museum as detailed in the November 10th issue of Coin World.

Reports:
Ray I. presented the Treasurer's Report. It was accepted as read. He mentioned that the club's $2,000.00 Lifetime Membership Certificate of Deposit will mature in May of 2004.

Bourse Chairman Malcolm G. had no additional comments on the October Show.

Sheryl W. presented the Secretary's Report for Chuck F. who was on vacation. It was accepted as read.

Old Business:
Sheryl provided a summation of the current TIC leaders as they stood after the Coin Show. Many members' TIC accumulation doubled due to their participation and assistance with the Coin Show. Also provided was a verbal listing of some of the TIC prizes for the December meeting. A written list will be provided in the December newsletter.

Members were informed of a last minute change in the catering service for the Christmas Dinner Meeting in December.

New Business:
    Officers were elected for 2004.

Guy informed the members that the Club is up for consideration for hosting the ANA mid-winter show in 2006 or 2008. Although Paul A. felt that we should table the discussion, the membership voted to go ahead and allow the Club to remain in contention as possible host.

Show and Tell:
Jesse A., one of the Club's Young Numismatists, displayed a pair of Stuivers (1727 & 1730) one of which he explained was counterfeit.

Paul A. brought Mexican 8 reales with black and red ink chop marks and also a 1789 Carlos with ink chop marks.

Bob K. had American Peanut Corp tokens he picked up at an antique shop in Smithfield. One was octagonal and the other was square.

Charles G. had a 100th TCC meeting wooden nickel he presented on behalf of newly re-joined member Edgar B.

Life Member Bill H. had a number of items: a 250 dinar note which became worthless after the Gulf War, according to Guy C.; a 2004 Australian Proof dollar; and a Vatican City 5 denarios (Nativity Scene.)

Exhibits:  None

Door Prize Winners:  Two "new" members Bill S. and Edgar B., Paul A. and Mike G.

Coin Game:  The subject was a U.S. Dime from 1803 - 2003. Fred M. was the winner.

Education Program:  Bob K. presented a program concerning Mexican coins. He had a number of coins displayed. Young Jesse A. made an inquiry of Mr. K. as to what "two bits" were, showing some knowledge on the subject.

Junior Question:  The question concerned explaining the meaning of a "Proof" coin. Two of our juniors (Jesse A. and Larry P. Jr.) were awarded a prize by the program's sponsor for correctly fielding the question.

50/50 Winner:  Norm F.

Raffle Winners:  Robert M. (our 1/10th oz gold winner at the October Coin show), Norm F. (our 50/50 winner), Gene F. (a triple win for our ex-treasurer), Bob K., Denny M., and last but not least Guy C. (our club president, who graciously gave his prize to Jesse A.'s younger brother Aaron.) All but two of the raffle winners came from the same table.

Auction:  The auction contained a full 50 lots with only six lots not sold. The strongest sales of the evening were three or so Mexican coin lots, not surprising since Mexican coins were the topic of this evening's Educational Program.

Items for the Betterment of the Club:  None

Next Meeting Items:  The coin for the coin game will be a United States Dollar minted between 1800 and 2003.

The meeting adjourned at 9:45 PM.
